A modular system designed to scale, adapt, and perform over time

Client: ADAPTIV Structure Solutions
Project: Frieze Art Fair – (Multi-Year Deployment)
Location: Los Angeles, California
Application: Large-Scale Temporary Gallery Space

Over three consecutive years, ADAPTIV Structure Solutions transformed some of Los Angeles’ most complex sites into world-class gallery environments for the Frieze Art Fair.

At the core of every installation: Losberger De Boer Maxiflex systems, delivering the consistency, flexibility, and scalability required to meet evolving demands.

The concept

Frieze Art Fair required museum-quality, large-scale gallery environments—capable of adapting to new venues each year while maintaining a consistent, high-end visitor experience.

Each installation had to balance:

  • Architectural presence
  • Structural performance
  • Precision-level finishes

The challenge

This was a multi-year project defined by change:

  • New venue each year, each with unique constraints
  • Increasing scale, exceeding 150,000 square feet
  • Complex substructures and leveling requirements
  • Strict aesthetic standards for gallery presentation
  • Tight timelines and regulatory coordination

The solution needed to evolve—without reinventing the system.

The solution

ADAPTIV deployed a consistent Losberger De Boer Maxiflex platform, adapting and expanding it year over year to meet new challenges.

By leveraging a modular system, they were able to:

  • Maintain consistency across changing environments
  • Integrate advanced flooring and wall systems
  • Introduce new architectural features without compromising performance

Year-by-Year Evolution

Year One: Paramount Studios

The inaugural installation introduced a 50m Maxiflex structure, built within the constraints of an active production lot.

Key features included:

  • Integrated Losberger De Boer cassette flooring system
  • Cassette wall system for clean, gallery-quality enclosure
  • One of the first integrations of the P5 ridge beam, enhancing structural capability

Despite restricted access and complex site conditions, the system delivered a controlled, high-performance environment—establishing a strong foundation for future expansion.

Year Two: Beverly Hilton Site

The same Maxiflex system was redeployed in a completely new environment.

With uneven terrain and expanded footprint requirements, the structure:

  • Maintained structural integrity across challenging ground conditions
  • Supported the creation of 125,000 square feet of level gallery space
  • Demonstrated the value of a repeatable, scalable system

No reinvention—just smarter deployment.

Year Three: Santa Monica Airport

The most complex installation to date expanded both scale and design capability.

Enhancements included:

  • Continued use of the 50m Maxiflex structure as the primary gallery space
  • Addition of a recessed gable, enabling integration with surrounding infrastructure
  • Introduction of a 30m Maxiflex Arcum structure, creating a dramatic entrance connection to an existing building

These additions allowed for:

  • Greater architectural flexibility
  • Seamless transitions between structures and permanent spaces
  • Expanded visitor flow and experience design

Why it worked

This project succeeded because of system continuity with layered innovation.

Losberger De Boer structures provided:

  • A consistent structural backbone across all three years
  • The flexibility to integrate new features like recessed gables and Arcum forms
  • The durability to perform across multiple deployments and environments

By reusing and evolving the same system, installation efficiency improved, planning became more predictable, and operational risk was significantly reduced.

For ADAPTIV, this meant building forward—not starting over, project after project.

The outcome

Across three years, ADAPTIV Structure Solutions:

  • Scaled from subcontractor to lead partner
  • Expanded from a single structure to a multi-structure environment
  • Delivered increasingly complex, design-forward installations

This approach enabled ADAPTIV to scale operations, increase project value year over year, and reduce complexity by building on a repeatable system.

All while relying on the same core Losberger De Boer system.

The partnership

ADAPTIV’s continued growth with Frieze Art Fair reflects the strength of a partnership built on performance and trust.

With Losberger De Boer structures as their foundation, they’ve been able to:

  • Take on more ambitious projects
  • Push design boundaries
  • Deliver consistent results under evolving conditions
The takeaway

The most powerful systems aren’t just built for one project—they’re built to evolve.

At Frieze Art Fair Los Angeles, Losberger De Boer proved that a single structural platform can scale, adapt, and perform—year after year, challenge after challenge.
