Event infrastructure for the German Derby

When the world’s leading riders come together in Hamburg, everything beyond the competition arena needs to perform too. For the Al Shira’aa German Jumping & Dressage Derby at Derby Park Klein Flottbek, Losberger De Boer created the temporary event infrastructure needed to support guests, media and event teams throughout the tournament.

Around the historic Derby grounds, a combination of hospitality and operational spaces created an environment where world-class sport and the overall guest experience could come together.

A prime view of the action

The German Derby is one of the highlights of the international equestrian calendar, bringing thousands of visitors to Hamburg and placing significant demands on the infrastructure surrounding the competition.

At the heart of the project was a 15 x 70 metre double-deck structure providing VIP hospitality directly alongside the jumping arena. Its elevated position gave guests an excellent view of the competition while creating a dedicated hospitality environment at the centre of the event.

The overall infrastructure also included three 5 x 5 metre peripheral structures, a 10 x 10 metre Anova and two aluminium halls measuring 15 x 20 and 10 x 25 metres. These provided dedicated areas for media and staff. Together, the different spaces supported the people who make an international sporting event work – from guests and media to the teams operating behind the scenes.

When site conditions become part of the challenge

Outdoor events inevitably have to deal with conditions that cannot be controlled. During the build, persistent rain softened loading and storage areas, making deliveries to the site increasingly difficult.

The team on site adapted to the changing conditions while keeping the installation on schedule. Despite the challenging ground conditions, the event infrastructure was ready as planned.

A partnership built on confidence

The partnership between organiser Schafhof Connects and Losberger De Boer is still relatively new, but previous events had already established a strong basis for continuing the relationship. Quality, expertise and straightforward cooperation were important factors in working together again.

“The price-performance ratio is right and the cooperation is great.”

The scale of the event underlined the importance of getting that infrastructure right. Around 95,000 spectators visited Derby Park despite mixed weather conditions. Tournament director Matthias Alexander Rath commented on the commitment of the crowd: “It’s fascinating. Even when it really rains, people stay in their seats.”

André Thieme provided one of the sporting highlights, winning the Longines Grand Prix in front of the Hamburg crowd.

The riders delivered the sporting moments. The spaces around the arena made it possible for guests to experience them, while giving media, staff and event teams the environments they needed to do their work. Together, they helped create the setting for one of Germany’s most established equestrian events.
