The site doesn't always follow the plan. Good engineering accounts for that.
Every project begins with an understanding of the site. The available space is measured, access routes are considered and the structure is engineered around the conditions expected during installation and use. The better that understanding is at the start, the more certainty there is later in the project.
The difficulty is that a site is not always as predictable as a drawing suggests. Water levels can fluctuate, prolonged rainfall can affect the ground and access routes that appear straightforward during planning may become more challenging when materials and heavy equipment need to reach the installation area. Existing buildings, underground infrastructure or limited working space can introduce further constraints.
These conditions do not necessarily make a location unsuitable, but they can influence how a project needs to be engineered and delivered. For temporary and semi-permanent structures, understanding the environment is therefore just as important as understanding the space that needs to be created.
A site is more than its dimensions
When an organisation needs additional space, the conversation naturally starts with practical requirements. How much space is needed? What will happen inside it? How high does it need to be and where can it be positioned?
Those questions establish what the space needs to achieve, but the location determines how that solution can be realised. Ground conditions, drainage, environmental loads, surrounding infrastructure and the available working area can all influence the technical approach. A paved industrial site presents different considerations from an undeveloped field, just as a location close to water differs from one surrounded by existing buildings and infrastructure.
This is why two projects requiring a similar amount of space can result in quite different solutions. A thorough understanding of the location allows those differences to become part of the engineering process from the beginning.
Designing for conditions that can change
A site survey provides valuable information, but it represents the conditions at a particular point in time. Depending on the location and the duration of the project, some of those conditions may change.
Water is a good example. A location beside a river or other body of water may have a very different water level when installation begins than it did during an earlier site visit. Extended periods of rain can affect unpaved ground, while wind, temperature and other environmental conditions can vary considerably between seasons and from one year to another.
For structures intended to remain in place for longer periods, the time horizon becomes particularly important. Past site conditions do not always provide a complete picture of what a structure may encounter throughout its use.
Good planning is not about trying to predict every possible scenario. It is about understanding which variables could realistically affect the project and considering the range of conditions the structure may reasonably need to accommodate. This allows engineering decisions to reflect not only what the site looks like today, but also how it could behave during the intended period of use.
What happens below the structure matters too
Most people will naturally judge a completed structure by what they can see above ground. From an engineering perspective, however, the surface underneath it is equally important because the loads created by the structure need to be safely accommodated.
The appropriate approach depends on several factors, including the structure itself, its intended use, the loads involved and the characteristics of the location. Existing concrete, paved surfaces and undeveloped ground each require different considerations, while underground services or other infrastructure may restrict where and how a structure can be positioned.
Understanding these conditions helps determine the appropriate engineering approach before installation begins and reduces the likelihood of discovering avoidable constraints once work is already underway.
A suitable location also needs to be accessible
There is another practical consideration that can easily be underestimated during the early stages of a project: everything required to build the structure needs to reach the site.
Materials, equipment and installation teams need sufficient access and working space. Restricted entrances, limited turning areas, neighbouring buildings or difficult terrain can affect how materials are delivered and in which sequence a structure can be installed.
This becomes particularly important when the surrounding location needs to remain operational. An industrial facility may still need to receive deliveries while additional space is being built, a public facility may need to remain accessible, or several contractors may be working on the same site at the same time.
Considering these activities as part of the project plan makes it possible to organise installation around the wider operation rather than expecting the wider operation to adapt around the installation.
Engineering and execution need to inform each other
Site conditions rarely affect just one part of a project. Changing the position of a structure may improve access but create different engineering requirements. Site preparation can influence the installation sequence, while limited working space may affect how and when materials can be delivered.
For that reason, engineering a complex project cannot happen in isolation from project management, logistics and installation. Decisions made in one area inevitably influence another, and bringing those disciplines together early provides a much more realistic picture of how the project can be delivered.
This was evident when Losberger De Boer delivered the temporary congress centre for the International Astronautical Congress in Baku. Limited space on site had to be considered alongside demanding wind-load requirements and a tight delivery programme. Rather than treating these as separate challenges, they became part of one engineering and delivery approach.
Another project may have an entirely different purpose and completely different site conditions. The principle remains relevant: the solution needs to respond to the reality of the location in which it will be used.
When conditions are different from expected
Even detailed preparation cannot remove every variable from a project. Conditions can be different when installation begins, or they can change while a structure is in use. A water level may be higher or lower than anticipated, prolonged rainfall may have changed the ground or other activities on site may have affected access.
When that happens, following the original plan without reconsidering the assumptions behind it is not necessarily the right response. The first step is to understand what has changed and whether it affects the engineering, installation or intended use of the structure.
Depending on the situation, an adjustment might involve positioning, site preparation, the technical approach or the installation sequence. The important point is that changes are assessed in relation to the wider project rather than addressed as isolated problems.
The customer's objective, after all, has not changed. An operation may need additional capacity, valuable equipment may need protection, people may need somewhere to work or learn, or an organisation may need space to continue providing an essential service. The technical approach can evolve when circumstances require it while remaining focused on the outcome the space needs to enable.
Good preparation makes a complex site feel straightforward
Once a structure is complete, much of the work that went into understanding the location is no longer visible. The people using the space do not need to think about the access restrictions that influenced the installation sequence, the ground conditions that affected the engineering or the environmental requirements considered during design. They simply need the space to perform safely and reliably for its intended purpose.
That is why assessing site conditions is more than a technical step in preparing a temporary or semi-permanent structure. It gives engineers, project managers and installation teams a shared understanding of the environment in which they are working and allows decisions to be made before constraints become problems.
Not every condition can be predicted, and a location will not always behave exactly as expected. Good engineering provides certainty in a different way: by understanding what matters, preparing for realistic change and knowing how to respond when circumstances develop differently.
For the customer, that means confidence that the project can continue moving towards the outcome that mattered from the beginning.

Understanding the site is the first engineering decision
A site is never simply an empty area on which a structure can be placed. Ground conditions, environmental loads, surrounding infrastructure, access and installation logistics all influence what is technically possible and how a project can best be delivered.
Considering these factors early gives engineers and project teams more opportunity to resolve constraints while there are still options available. It also creates a stronger basis for decision-making if conditions later turn out to be different from those originally expected.
