There are plenty of positives to take away from the past event season, which was perhaps the most significant for our industry in recent history. Looking back at the past year or so, we would like to share some recent projects with you, that you may find inspirational, or useful, as you start planning for 2023. We would also like to highlight and celebrate some positive developments, trends, and creative thinking, that we feel will help shape the events of tomorrow.

COP26, Glasgow, United Kingdom

There are challenges, and then there’s the COP26-project, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. For this high-profile event, where world leaders debated how to tackle the effects of climate change, we delivered 37.500 m² of temporary buildings within a short timeframe, under constantly changing circumstances and with no margin for error. Needless to say, we loved it.

What did we deliver?
We provided a wide range of bespoke buildings. We delivered both single and double deck structures to house the media centre, UNFCCC offices, the main entrance and security facilities, as well as large acoustically optimised meeting rooms. By adding these buildings, we were able to increase the capacity of the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) significantly, allowing it to host this massive event.

New: innovative systems for optimal acoustics
The COP26 project featured a number of recent innovations. We equipped several conference halls and meeting rooms with our new, upgraded, re-usable and quick-to-install Acoustic Barrier Wall and Roof Systems, to ensure perfectly balanced acoustics for large-scale meetings, as well as to eradicate the noise caused by inclement November weather in Scotland

In addition to this, we put some recent initiatives on the topic of sustainability to the test in Glasgow. Among other things, this resulted in unprecedented levels of thermal insulation, making the venue far less energy-consuming. We will update you on these innovations throughout 2022 and 2023.

We also used several newly developed components, like our new floor that is made from recycled, composite materials instead of wood, making it lighter and stronger, as well as increasing the lifespan of the product.

The fact that more and more event organisers take sustainability into account when planning events.

That the organizing team of the UN Climate Change Conference demanded a venue that was as sustainable as possible, will surprise no-one. But since this is a topic that is close to our heart (as we are committed to becoming a climate neutral company in 2030), we were very happy to see that we received more enquiries about sustainable solutions than ever before.

Van Gogh Alive, London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Van Gogh Alive is described as an exhibition like no other, a far cry from art expo’s in their traditional form, and a truly immersive, multi-sensory experience. Having built the venue for the London and Manchester exhibitions, we can only say that we wholeheartedly agree.

What did we deliver?
In order to facilitate this multi-sensory experience, which made clever use of video, projection, music and even scent, we delivered a sound and light proof venue that that allowed all these elements to work their magic. Some parts of the building needed to be completely blacked-out, while other parts could be flooded with light. Acoustics needed to be perfect and the noise that comes with an inner-city location needed to be cancelled out.

A relocatable venue
We designed and provided the template for the exhibition in each city of the UK tour, which started in London, then moved to Manchester for the second leg, before travelling up to Edinburgh in February. We built the London venue, which we then dismantled, transported, and rebuilt in Manchester in the exact same way (give or take a few minor local adjustments).

We celebrate…
The creativity of the exposition organizers and our own team, to allow Van Gogh’s art to come alive in such an unprecedented and spectacular fashion, as well as the modular system on which all our buildings and tents are based. It is this system that allowed for all the custom solutions, and for the entire venue to be relocated and rebuilt on another site half way across the country, creating a truly moving exposition in more than one sense of the word.

Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom

Losberger De Boer has been building hospitality facilities on the holy grounds of Wimbledon since 1994. This year, once again we built the Rosewater and the Lawn Pavilions, the two largest hospitality buildings at the tournament.

What did we deliver?
The Rosewater and Lawn pavilions offer a combined total of 3500 m2 of premium hospitality space. Due to the extremely tight schedule, both facilities needed to be delivered in one month. As soon as our assembly teams were done, an army of skilled fit-out specialists appeared, to transform the inside into a five-star VIP facility. One of the new features that was introduced this year, was a new, stylish, cantilever terrace, that offered guests a great view over practice courts and the designated ‘chillout area’.

We celebrate…
Long-term partnerships, and experience. Building these massive, top-class structures is no small task. Experience is key here, and we are truly appreciative of our experienced and multi-functional installation crew, that built our facilities at the Chelsea Flower Show, Wimbledon and the Commonwealth Games, finishing off with the Laver Cup at the O2 and Somerset House in September We are also thankful for the trust our clients have placed in us, to be able to deliver the best possible VIP hospitality facilities within one week.

Racing event, Zandvoort, The Netherlands

The largest motorsports competition in the world has made a return to the tiny Dutch town of Zandvoort. For the second race in decades, arguably the biggest event in the Netherlands this year, we pulled out all the stops, delivering top-class hospitality buildings and branding the existing pit-lane buildings.

What did we deliver?
Three bespoke, completely different, high-end double-deck hospitality buildings for the organization and major brands, as well as an extension to the circuit’s pit-lane building.

So what’s new?
For one of the hospitality pavilions, we utilized a never-before used combination of tent systems, which were heavily modified to meet the clients wishes. This required a lot of creative thinking, plenty of complex calculations and the creation of lot of new and adapted parts and components.

We also expanded (and transformed) the pit-lane building by wrapping it with temporary structures, to create the perfect mix between form and function. The adaptation meant that the building could be used for team hospitality, as well as to house the international media.

We celebrate…
The determination and creativity of our R&D department. They are the people that allow us to create tailor-made connections between different tent systems, and between temporary structures and existing buildings. We celebrate their ability to make the required and extremely complex calculations, their creativity in inventing new parts and components, and their resolve to simply refuse to take ‘no’ for an answer.
