One system. Three years. A scalable model for growth.
A modular system designed to scale, adapt, and perform over time
Over three consecutive years, ADAPTIV Structure Solutions delivered large-scale gallery environments for the Frieze Art Fair across multiple locations in Los Angeles.
Each year introduced new challenges—different venues, increasing scale, and evolving design requirements. By building on a consistent Losberger De Boer Maxiflex system, the project demonstrates how modular structures can support long-term, high-performance applications in complex environments.
The opportunity
Frieze Art Fair required museum-quality gallery spaces capable of delivering a consistent visitor experience while adapting to new locations each year.
The structures needed to:
- Provide a premium, exhibition-grade environment
- Adapt to changing site conditions and layouts
- Support increasing scale and complexity
- Maintain consistency across multiple editions
The challenge
This multi-year project was defined by continuous change:
- A new venue each year, each with unique technical constraints
- Increasing scale, exceeding 150,000 square feet
- Complex substructures and leveling requirements
- High aesthetic standards for gallery presentation
- Tight timelines and regulatory coordination
The solution needed to evolve over time—without requiring a complete redesign for each installation.
The solution
ADAPTIV implemented a consistent Maxiflex platform, adapting and expanding the system year over year to meet new requirements.
This modular approach made it possible to:
- Maintain structural consistency across different environments
- Integrate advanced flooring and wall systems
- Introduce new architectural features while preserving system integrity
A system that evolves: year-by-year development
Year One: Paramount Studios
The initial installation introduced a 50m Maxiflex structure within the constraints of an active production site.
Key elements included:
- Integrated cassette flooring system
- Cassette wall system for a clean, gallery-quality finish
- Early integration of the P5 ridge beam
The result was a controlled, high-performance environment that established the foundation for future development.
Year Two: Beverly Hilton Site
The same Maxiflex system was redeployed in a new setting with uneven terrain and increased spatial requirements.
The structure:
- Maintained performance across challenging ground conditions
- Enabled the creation of 125,000 square feet of level gallery space
- Demonstrated the value of a repeatable, scalable solution
Year Three: Santa Monica Airport
The third installation expanded both scale and architectural capability.
Enhancements included:
- Continued use of the 50m Maxiflex structure
- Integration of a recessed gable for improved connectivity
- Addition of a 30m Maxiflex Arcum structure to connect with an existing building
These developments supported:
- Greater design flexibility
- Seamless integration with permanent infrastructure
- Improved visitor flow and spatial experience
Why it works
This project highlights the strength of combining system continuity with ongoing innovation.
Losberger De Boer structures provided:
- A consistent structural foundation across all three years
- The flexibility to integrate new features and configurations
- The durability required for repeated deployment in different environments
By reusing and evolving the same system, installation processes became more efficient, planning more predictable, and overall execution more streamlined.
The result
Across three years, the project evolved from a single-structure installation into a large-scale, multi-structure environment.
The approach enabled:
- Consistent delivery across changing locations
- Increased scale and complexity over time
- Efficient deployment based on a proven system
The venue continues to serve as a high-quality, flexible gallery environment for one of the world’s leading art fairs.
