Next stop: Stuttgart’s new Central Station

Published on

Throughout the restauration process of the Stuttgart Central Station, our space solutions are used as temporary accommodations to facilitate employees, travellers and local businesses. Applications range from small kiosks to multi-storey office and reception buildings.

As part of the major Stuttgart 21 project, Stuttgart Central Station, one of the busiest long-distance railway stations in Germany, is being adapted to meet the requirements of a more mobile society. One prerequisite for this is the conversion and renovation of the Bonatzbau reception building, which was built in 1914. It is to be completely modernised by 2025 and expanded to include retail, gastronomy and hotel space.

To make sure that the station and the businesses located there remained operational throughout the demolition and rebuilding works, a lot of facilities were relocated to temporary locations on the station grounds, using space solutions by Losberger De Boer.

Sales pavilions as door openers

In 2015 we erected six high-quality freestanding pavilions in just three weeks, which are still operated today and function as kiosks and coffee houses for Dean & David, Kübler and Yormas. With this project, our team laid the foundation for many other modular space solutions in Stuttgart.

A new reception building

At the end of 2018, the second order followed for a two-storey reception building, which was constructed both in the open air and under the existing roofing near platform 1. On 585 m², we created space for waiting areas, toilets, shops, offices and storage rooms as well as for railway information and ticket sales.

Nine waiting rooms in just a few nights work

Assembling temporary buildings in areas with high passenger traffic comes with special challenges. This was also the case in November 2019, when a time window of seven days was available for the construction of nine waiting rooms and technical facilities. Our modular buildings were prefabricated, driven to the construction site with special rail vehicles and lifted onto the platforms with cranes. In addition to this, the construction work could only be carried out at night due to the ongoing train service.

Service centre on three floors

As the renovation work progressed, other parts of the old station closed in autumn 2020, including the Bonatzbau main station building. At that time, the station management staff moved into a new, three-storey service centre on Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger-Platz. The highlight of the 850 m² modular building is the illuminated façade on the north side of the building. This is already seen locally as the Stuttgart gateway to the future.
